About Chantel Spinner, Owner & Founder

Chantel Spinner is the Owner and Founder of The Melanin Fluent Doula, where she provides culturally fluent, holistic support to families throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. She is a certified birth and postpartum doula, lactation support counselor, and Pregnancy and Infant Loss advocate, proudly serving Lynchburg, Virginia, and surrounding communities.

A Lynchburg native and mother of two daughters, Chantel brings both professional expertise and lived experience to her work. She holds a degree in Sociology with minors in Human Services and Gender Studies from Randolph College and is also a Notary Public for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Chantel’s work is rooted in advocacy, compassion, and reproductive justice. She is deeply committed to creating empowering spaces where birthing people feel seen, informed, and respected. Her passion for birth work was shaped by both the serious disparities in maternal health, particularly the disproportionate impact on Black women, and her own personal experiences with maternal morbidity. Those experiences gave her a firsthand understanding that harm in birth is not limited to mortality. That lived experience continues to fuel her commitment to helping families navigate pregnancy, birth, and postpartum with more support, more information, and stronger advocacy.

Through her practice, Chantel nurtures, educates, and empowers families with care that honors both their individual needs and their lived realities. In addition to doula support, she is a certified Peristeam Facilitator trained through Steamy Chick, a lactation support counselor certified in 2021, and a dedicated advocate for families experiencing pregnancy and infant loss.

She is also continuing to expand her knowledge as an amateur herbalist, reconnecting with the healing traditions of her Black Southern heritage and grounding her practice in holistic wellness.

“I may not be able to change all outcomes, but I believe deeply that I can impact my community: one birth, one family, one moment at a time”

“The peace and calmness I feel while working as a doula is something I will pursue until I no longer feel effective. I am extremely thankful for every family that has chosen to have me by their side during these vulnerable times. Creating a peaceful atmosphere for the entrance of our future generations into the world is an honor. After each experience, I leave with a tired body, an empty stomach, and a heart overflowing with the desire to contribute to my community”.

"Being a doula feels like I am the midpoint between our ancestors and the future. The strength of those before me guides me instinctively as I help guide this new life into the world".
