“ My goal is to support pregnant and birthing people through whatever path this journey may take them.”

Why the name?

I've spent weeks thinking of a name, and after going through a few name generators, I came across a combination that stood out to me. The name "melanin fluent" holds personal significance to me. "Melanin" refers to the pigment that people of color have, and "fluent" means being able to express oneself easily and articulately.

These two words are important to me because women with lots of melanin are dying in great numbers for birth-related reasons. I believe that these women can benefit from having someone who is educated and fluent in topics related to reproductive injustices. The colors mentioned represent the vast shades of pregnant individuals who I consider worthy of better care in America.

While I may not be able to change the world, I hope to make an impact one person or birth at a time. Birth is one of the most vulnerable times in an individual of color's life, and I want to stand beside them, not as an expert but as someone who won't hesitate to seek help and who is enthusiastic about justice.

As Ibram X. Kendi said, if a space isn't designated as a space of color, it's automatically considered a white space. I want to take up space for you and your unborn baby, and I aim to create spaces for people of color where their intersectionality is recognized, and their individual needs are fully understood. I'm committed to supporting everyone on your support team, and together we can accomplish anything.
